Album 1973 7 Songs. Live At Jazz en Tête. Kenny Barron & Gary Bartz. The Meeting. Dexter Gordon & Jackie McLean. New York Calling. Jackie McLean. West 42nd Street. Gary Bartz Quintet. Members Don't Get Weary. Max Roach. This matchup between altoists Jackie McLean and Gary Bartz has always been a bit of a disappointment with the solos much stronger than the material. The title cut, Ode to Super, which has vocals from the two co-leaders is taken from a play, and the originals by McLean, Bartz and pianist Thomas Clausen are not too memorable. Only a torrid jam on Charlie Parker's Red Cross really works. A more suitable encore by the two greats is long overdue.
