Although Jack Sterling played drums on Cocktail Swing, a 1959 release on Columbia's Harmony budget label, he was better known as the early morning disc joc. When Cocktail Swing came out Sterling was still featuring live music on his radio show, a rarity for the late 1950s. Although his skills on the drum kit were rudimentary Sterling surrounded himself with top New York studio musicians for the date: bass Buddy Jones, clarinet Andy Fitz, guitar Mary Osborne, piano Tony Aless, vibraphone Tyree Glenn, trombone. Cocktail Swing and another ColumbiaHarmony LP, Music from Gypsy Broadway show, appear to be the entire recorded output of Jack Sterling. Jack-Knife Gypsy is the second album from folk rockcountry rock musician Paul Siebel. This record does not have that same kind of pull but is every bit as good. Jack-Knife Gypsy was re-issued on CD by Line in 1994. Jack-Knife Gypsy was reissued on CD with Woodsmoke and Oranges by WEA International on October 12, 2004.
