Poetry For The Beat Generation - Jack Kerouac, Steve Allen. Poetry for the Beat Generation is the debut album of American novelist and poet Jack Kerouac and was originally released in 1959. Initial performances of these poems were poorly received by an audience at the Village Vangard in 1957. However, Kerouac was so impressed with how the poems sounded when accompanied by Steve Allen's piano that it became the first record Kerouac committed to audio. For the second performance, Kerouac's friend Steve Allen provided the accompaniment at the piano, with results so impressive that it would lead Kerouac to a short but dazzling career as a recording artist. The first result was this album, which came at the suggestion of either Allen or his friend, producer Bob Thiele, who was working for Dot Records at the time. The record was cut in a single session and a single take for each piece. Jack Kerouac. Poetry for the Beat Generation with Steve Allen. Charlie Parker Montréal 1953 : Jack Kerouac, Steve Allen. Released in 1959, Poetry for the Beat Generation was Kerouac's debut, and came about likely at the behest of TV personality, comic and musician Steve Allen, after having performed on stage with Kerouac at the Village Vanguard in 1957. Jack later described the 1958 recording session thus: I came up to New York from Florida for the date, which was arranged by mail, and went into the studio to meet Steve at 1pm. I was carrying a huge suitcase full of untyped manuscripts of prose and poetry. He started to play the piano, making a sign to the engineer. They turned on the tape. Each is a classic in its own right, but the first, Poetry for the Beat Generation, is arguably the most aurally appealing. ComedianTV personality Steve Allen was a champion of visionary artists like Kerouac and Lenny Bruce, bringing them on his show to offer them mass exposure. But his support of Kerouac became more personal when Allen improvised jazz piano accompaniment for the iconoclastic writer's readings of the pieces on this recording
