That's no coincidence there are 24 fugues in the cycle of the Well-Tempered Clavier Book 1, two fugues for each of the twelve tonal keys - once in major, once in minor 2 x 12 24. Bach loved numbers, symbolism, and symmetry, so this is very likely his way of showing that he intended to write 24 fugues altogether. The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV 846893, is a collection of two sets of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, composed for solo keyboard by Johann Sebastian Bach. In Bach's time Clavier keyboard was a generic name indicating a variety of keyboard instruments, most typically a harpsichord or clavichord but not excluding an organ. The modern German spelling for the collection is Das wohltemperierte Klavier WTK German pronunciation: . Bach gave the. In any case, Lewis's Bach is suave, groovy, casual - cocktail Bach, if you will. To call it cerebral and spiritual, as a previous reviewer has, makes no sense to my ears at all it's exactly the opposite. Lewis also relies on 'back-up' strings for some of the preludes, making them sound quite schmaltzy at times. Don't get me wrong here I'm not denouncing what Lewis has done. I enjoy it. He's taken 'written' music by JS Bach and conflated it with his own sensibilities as an improviser. All four disks, Volumes 1 through 4 are well worth tracking down. Yet given that Bach was an improviser himself, and that he had no qualms about taking liberties with music from previous centuries, the thought of Bach mixed with Bachian reveries isn't entirely appalling. He acquits himself well in some of the preludes, playing with warmth and clarity and choosing his anachronisms carefully. On his Bach album, Mr. Lewis's genuine affection for the composer doesn't come through his playing. With the ensemble, and sometimes by himself, he makes Bach sound like background music. He is lively even in the slower fugues which has a satisfying effect, unless you tend toward either the Romantic or the purely historical interpretational extremes. Sample the F minor fugue for an idea. Although well-controlled, Jarrett's performances are never inexpressive, and you can listen to the whole set without the feeling of anything being repeated.
