Notes

On September 8, 1984, Isao Tomita presented a live, outdoor concert on the shore of the Danube River in Linz, Austria, for an audience of 80,000 people. The concert was called The Mind of the Universe, and through his interpretations of classical music, Mr. Tomita was attempting to describe the 15-billion-year history of the universe.

He employed 13 channels of sound, including one from a helicopter 1,500 feet above the river, multi-channels on either side of the river and on a ship that also carried the violinist, shakuhachi player and a chorus of 100 Austrian singers. Special lighting, lasers, fireworks and other visual effects enhanced the sound presentation. Tomita's "stage", where he controlled the sound, was a specially constructed pyramid suspended from a crane near the river.

"The Mind Of The Universe" was the first in a series of concerts called "Ars Electronica". It was recorded live by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF).

Artist name appears on labels as "Tomita & The Plasma Symphony Orchestra"

The opening fanfare from Strauss' Zarathustra of 2001 Space Odyssey's fame was on the 1978 album Kosmos in a different arrangement if memory serves and Tomita used it again in the same arrangement as here, but slightly better sonics two years later in New York the two excerpts from Holst's Planets were on The Tomita Planets from 1976 and Tomita used. One fine summer's evening in Linz, Austria, Isao Tomita presented the second of a series of hugely ambitious outdoor Tomita Sound Cloud concerts called The Mind of the Universe - and this is its soundtrack. This is easily the most curious album of Tomita's RCA period, and not a first or second choice for the newcomer. Tomita created the album's polyphony as Carlos had done before him, with the use of multitrack recording, recording each voice of a piece one at a time, on a separate tape track, and then mixing the result to stereo or quad. It took 14 months to produce the album. In 1984, Tomita released Canon of the Three Stars, which featured classical pieces renamed for astronomical objects. For example, the title piece is his version of Pachelbel's Canon in D Major. The Mind of the Universe - Live at Linz 1985. Back to the Earth - Live in New York 1988. Hansel und Gretel 1993.
