It was released on 29 September 1986 in the United Kingdom by EMI Records and in the United States by Capitol Records. It was the band's first album to feature guitar synthesisers. Its one of their most intricately detailed album covers and layered with many in-jokes and nods to their past. Artist Derek Riggs spent weeks on the 32-inch by 15-inch painting. It wore me out quite severely, Riggs revealed in Martin Popoffs book Run For Cover: The Art Of Derek Riggs. I was living in London at the time, and working on that for two months, and it took three months in all I just had to stop, because I had had enough. Fortunately, Iron Maiden doesnt fall into this trap with Somewhere in Time, as this album just happens to be metal with a layer of synthesizer on it. Mostly synthesizers are used for atmospheric affect, and what an atmosphere it creates. This is where the album succeeds mostly, its atmosphere inspired by the one featured in sci-fi masterpiece Blade Runner is rivaled by few of any genre. The band alternates between truly complex compositions, and relatively straight forward ones. The weakest album from Iron Maiden's classic 80s period, Somewhere in Time is really the first true disappointment in their catalog, too often collapsing under the weight of their now-trademark ambition. Though it sold well on the heels of the hugely successful Powerslave tour, and is often regarded as underrated by Maiden devotees, it clearly finds the band struggling to refresh what was rapidly hardening into formula
