Finally a great live performance dvd release of Iced Earth!!!! The year was 2006. The first live-dvd of Iced Earth finally released, "Alive In Athens". They already had the 3-cd set of the same concert that was on the dvd and the cd's were the best live-performance I've ever heard. Then the dvd, man that was a dissapointment. The sound was great, but the quality of the live footage was plain awful! They had only 1 or 2 camera's and it was just a straight on recording. Unfortunately that makes it not interesting to watch at all, even though the sound was great. Then finally, 5 years have past and here it is. Not just a live-dvd. A very complete package with 3 concerts on 2 dvd's, a live-cd, video clips, bonus downloads and a posterflag! The concerts are perfect, good recordings, good music quality, good setlists. Even with the constant changing line-up Iced Earth always does their absolute best to play their music perfectly. Unfortunately there are differences notable, mostly with the vocal duties. Different singers just have different voices so it just can't sound exactly the same. The good thing is that they released this dvd with both Matthew Barlow and Ripper Owens doing the vocal duties! You can make up your own mind, my favourite stays Barlow, even though I never had the chance to see him live. My review: 5 stars! Only thing that could be better is the tracklisting, because there are only 23 different songs, even though the complete release counts 60 tracks. This is mostly because the 2008 concerts have the same setlist and the cd is made up of songs from the concerts.

Regarding the Alive in Athens DVD release; the DVD was compiled and released by Century Media in 2006, when Iced Earth was signed to SPV, and it never had Jon Schaffer's seal of approval. If the concert had been properly videotaped, I'm sure a DVD for it would have been released soon after the album was released in 1999, however, it was not, as you have said. It probably never should have been released.
