Howard McGhee. Trumpeter Howard McGhee, after spending much of the 1950s only partly active in music due to drug problems, made a full-fledged comeback in the early '60s only to find his bop-oriented music out of fashion. This Contemporary set reissued on CD in the OJC series was McGhee's finest recording of the period, a quartet outing with brilliant pianist Phineas Newborn, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Shelly Manne. Not only does this album showcase McGhee's considerable talents on trumpet, but the aforementioned Demon Chase is evidence of his compositional skills. While at first I lamented the absence of Teddy Edwards' tenor sax on this album I am now happy that he is not on the album. My reason is there is a certain magic in the music that comes from McGhee backed by only rhythm section. Too many of my other recording have him with Edwards, Bird and even big band settings. This album was recorded in a single session for Contemporary in Los Angeles on June 26, 1961.
