Info

Love Remains is the debut studio album by How to Dress Well. Pitchfork placed it at number 19 on its list of The Top 50 Albums of 2010. How To Dress Well is easily one of the eeriest lo-fi projects to come out this year. Its influences range from ambient electronica to modern R&B. The album has its impressive moments, but most of them are ruined by the shoddy sound quality. All the vocal peaking and overmodulation could conceptual foundation is interesting, but Love Remains succeeds because you don't have to think about that stuff to absorb its peculiar magic. For one thing, it has an arresting surface-level prettiness that offers an easy way in. An album I keep thinking of when listening to How to Dress Well is Panda Bear's 2004 LP, Young Prayer. That was another homemade record haunted by mortality with blurred words that nonetheless managed to communicate a powerful and highly personal sense of spiritual yearning. There are also hints of Bon Iver in Krell's falsetto and in the way he transforms the signifiers of R&B into something homegrown and personal. Album 2010 14 Songs. You Hold The Water 2. Despite the abundance of lo-fi acts and artists revisiting the sounds of their childhood in 2010, How to Dress Well remained unique. Tom Krells fractured background, which included loving late-80s R&B as a little boy, playing in bands throughout high school, and recording drone music in college and beyond, came together as something organic in Love Remains. And if anything, the rest of Love Remains works within this precise swing of the pendulum, left to right and back again, tick tok, tick tok. And its as subtle as that too: a dynamic so barely perceptible, yet with the gravity of time itself well, at the very least, Krell can make you feel as though it was. Maybe its the voice. Hazy and indistinct, the comparisons to Justin Vernon havent been far off, but the Krells is less a cry than it is a textured instrument unto itself, laden with soulfully infected falsetto that stretches from ghostly chorus lines to heavy panting like, actual pant. For those who had only heard this album on Spotify or Apple Music, as I was, this vinyl pressing sounds slightly different (and better) than the streaming version. Not that it still isn't willfully, deftly distorted electronica, but you realize much of the fuzzy distortion you hear around Tom's vocals throughout the streaming/download version is actually not meant to be there(!). Someone screwed up the levels on the digital transfer or something. So it's a bit mystifying, for instance, that "You Won't Need Me Where I'm Goin" still has the same crackliness as the digital version. However, in almost all other tracks, it is a richer, smoother, more enjoyable experience to the ears (relatively speaking for a wrecked-sound release such as this).
