Sample this album Artist Sample. Here are the 1957 reunion troops: Al Cohn, Zoot Sims and Herbie Stewart on tenor and perhaps the greatest baritone sax of all time, Serge Chaloff. Chaloff taught Gerry Milligan's and by all reports could play rings around him on the unwieldy baritone. Along with his album with Count Basie Basie and Zoot during the same period, this is one of Sims' most exciting recordings of his career. In 1948 Al Cohn replaced Steward. In 1957 for this reunion session Getz was not available so instead Sims, Steward, Cohn and Chaloff were contacted. Accompanied by a rhythm section that includes pianist Elliott Lawrence, they naturally revived Four Brothers but otherwise mostly played newer songs by Gerry Mulligan, Manny Albam who provided the date's arrangements, Lawrence, Cohn and Sims. The idea of so many low saxophones 3 tenors and 1 bari was a bit unusual, so the brothers worked on trying to get the softest smoothest sound they could get. The slinky smooth style of Lester Young is a big influence, as well as the voicings and style of Gerry Mulligan, who had also played with the brothers in Hermman's band.
