Info
Conductor François-Xavier Roth took this adventurous band through Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique in a revelatory 2010 release on Actes Sud, and they have gone from strength to strength in recordings for that label and Harmonia Mundi. This 2018 album of Harold en Italie and Les Nuits d'Été marks their return to Berlioz, though the orchestra's expert playing and the exceptional audio reproduction show a real advance in the quality of the finished product. In Les Nuits dété, Berlioz pioneered, well before Mahler and Ravel, a song cycle for voice and orchestra. In Harold in Italy, scored for large orchestra and solo viola, he experimented with the symphonic genre. These period-instrument performances by Les Siècles, led by François-Xavier Roth, with violist Tabea Zimmermann, also feature Stéphane Degout in the vocal cycle, heard here in the composers own version for baritone. Les nuits d'été Summer Nights, Op. 7, is a song cycle by the French composer Hector Berlioz. It is a setting of six poems by Théophile Gautier. The cycle, completed in 1841, was originally for soloist and piano accompaniment. Berlioz orchestrated one of the songs in 1843, and did the same for the other five in 1856. The cycle was neglected for many years, but during the 20th century it became, and has remained, one of the composer's most popular works. The full orchestral version is more frequently. Tabea Zimmermann - François-Xavier Roth - Les Siècles - Stéphane Degout. The Guardian, 24th January 2019 Les Siècles use woodwind and brass instruments from the middle decades of the 19th century, which, combined with the gut strings, create busy, buoyant textures over which Tabea Zimmermann's solo viola can soar with ease, though there is no lack of tonal weight when the orchestra takes centre stage, as it does increasingly through the. course of the work. delivery of these songs is impeccable. Gramophone This new recording with Tabea Zimmermann has much to recommend it. Tabea Zimmermann. Sérénade d'un montagnard des Abbruzes à sa maîtresse. Allegro assai, 05:58. Berlioz orchestrated Les Nuits d'été op 7 for different voice types, though they are usually done by female singers, so there is no reason per se why they can't be tackled by men tenors have done them fairly frequently in the past. On this recording, paired with Harold en Italie, a male voice extends the idea of a hero bravely venturing forth. In any case, Stéphane Degout has the range and finesse. Pairing Berliozs Harold en Italie with his song cycle Les Nuits dété is so obviously a good fit Im surprised it hasnt become more of a concert and recording staple. His music was largely ignored for more than 80 years after his death, his maverick style misjudged as eccentric, outlandish and even amateur. We pinpoint the event that led to a true appreciation of his genius
