Info
The Chronicle of the Black Sword is the fourteenth studio album by the English space rock group Hawkwind, released in 1985. It spent two weeks on the UK albums chart peaking at 65. The album is based upon the adventures of Elric of Melniboné, a recurring character in the novels of science fiction author Michael Moorcock, a long-standing associate of the group, who contributes lyrics to one track on the album. Hawkwind and science-fictionfantasy author Michael Moorcock had been hovering around each other's vicinities for years before they finally got around to recording this adaptation of Moorcock's Elric novels long a favorite on the old DAW paperback line. How dare I be so beautiful Chronicle of the black sword is one of Hawkwind's most creative albums, thanks in no small part to Michael Moorcock's Elric stories, on which the album is based. Many of the tracks feature the familiar sound of Hawkwind's driving pace, and monotone vocals, Song of the swords, Sea king, and the wonderful Needle gun to name but three. This is a concept album in the same spirit of classic Hawkwind of the 70s and is a welcome return to form. It is one to seek out though not easy to find. The search will be worth it as it is one of Hawkwind's greatest 80s albums. Song of the Swords, 03:23. Shade Gate, 03:01. The Pulsing Cavern, 02:32. The Demise, 00:56. There's just so many aspects about this CD that are right. Being a fan of Hawkwind has similarities with being a fan of Doctor Who we all have a favourite Doctor Troughton thanks for asking and we all have a line-up or two as our favourite set of Hawks. For me, this matches that mid-80s period where I get into Hawkwind first from a few gigs then this album mixing in as it does the Elric stories of Michael Moorcock
