The Serpent In Quicksilver consists of five solo keyboard works and one very interesting collaboration between Budd and pedal steel player Chas Smith. That piece, titled Afar, evokes some of the music Brian and Roger Eno and Daniel Lanois were making at around the same time to accompany a film about the Apollo space mission. It's echoey and ethereal, and yet that pedal steel sound keeps things tethered to the earth nothing wrecks the mental image of limitless space quite like the sound of steel guitar. Born in Los Angeles, California, he was raised in the Mojave Desert, and was inspired at an early age by the humming tone caused by wind blown across telephone wires. His career as a composer began in 1962. In the following years he gained a notable reputation in the local avant-garde community. Only for completionists 0. I played Dark Star and Abandoned Cities sitting out in a chair at the water's edge of the Gulf Of Mexico outside our hotel room and again. His discography consists of thirteen studio albums, one EP, one live album, three soundtrack albums and several collaborations with other artists. His first recording The Oak of the Golden Dreams, Coeur D'Orr was released in 1971, but subsequently Budd didn't release anything until Brian Eno released The Pavilion of Dreams on his Obscure Records label in 1978.
