Info

The Ethiopiques series of world music keeps slowly widening its arc, and this time around it's come up with some very interesting vintage circa 1972 material. Ethiopiques, Vol. 14: Negus of Ethiopian Sax features Getatchew Mekurya, a sax player whose inspiration comes from traditional warrior music: the kind meant to whip soldiers into a frenzy before battle. The album features ten of Gétatchew Mekurya's arrangements, blowing a snaking, smoky and hypnotic stream of notes over very minimal backing of shuffled percussion, keys. 14: Negus of Ethiopian Sax. Many of the tracks on this album are songs featured on the original Ehthiopiques 14. I must say I am not a fan of the vocalist on the album. I don't feel he brings much to the party, but it doesn't keep me from recommending this album. In the liner notes of Moa Abessa Mekurya laments that in the West his country is only known for war and hunger crises. Listen free to Gétatchèw Mèkurya ethiopiques 14 - Negus of Ethiopian Sax. Éthiopiques is a series of compact discs featuring Ethiopian singers and musicians. Many of the CDs compile songs from various singles and albums that Amha Records, Kaifa Records and Philips-Ethiopia released during the 1960s and 1970s in Ethiopia. Prominent singers and musicians from this era appearing on Éthiopiques releases include Alemayehu Eshete, Asnaketch Worku, Mahmoud Ahmed, Mulatu Astatke and Tilahun Gessesse. 2003 Éthiopiques Volume 14: Negus of Ethiopian Sax, Getatchew Mekurya. 2003 Éthiopiques Volume 15: Jump to Addis, various artists. Gétatchèw Mèkurya had the brilliant idea of transposing it to his saxophone. In this daring, improvisational, angry and impetuous musical form, each melisma spirals dizzyingly towards less structur. Probably the most revered veteran of Ethiopian saxophone, Gétatchèw Mèkurya is the inventor of an extremely distinctive musical 'style'. There exists, among Ethiopia's many vocal genres, a form of singing that is purely warlike: epic and declamatory, harsh and hoarse-voiced, it is known as shellèla.
