The Best of The Guess Who is the fourth compilation album by the Canadian group The Guess Who. It was originally released by RCA Records in April 1971 and contains recordings made between 1968 and 1970. The album reached number 12 on the Billboard top LPs chart in the United States. A follow up, The Best of The Guess Who Volume II, was released in 1973. The single version of American Woman is missing an introduction. The single version of. The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessorcounterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening These Eyes, with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of American Woman, the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy Undun and the CS&N-is. The Guess Who is a Canadian band, and that's probably why so many of their songs resonate with me. I lived in Canada between about 1972-1975, and that was during my Jr HS and HS years, a time when many of our musical tastes are starting to develop. Anyway, from what I understand there was a policy at the time that there had to be a certain percentage of music played and TV shows aired that were Canadian. Also, 1972-75 were years when some of The Guess Who's greatest hits came , when I say this album on the 5 list a while back and I scanned and previewed the tracks, I saw immediately that it was a winner - cha-ching Added to my collection.
