Needless to say, Nilsson's development is crucial if the boys in Graveyard are to mature into the roles of dyed-in-the-wool bluesmen that they seemingly aspire to in years to come, but, for the moment, Lights Out suggests they are capable of producing compelling work even as they become increasingly comfortable in their own skin. The 70s-leaning Swedish band Graveyard point to a tradition of American blues and European blues rock that's always been part of metal's family tree, no matter the latest fashion. On their third album, they mix catchy, hyperkinetic songs with slowly swelling ballads. Before there was metal, there was the blues. Metal's original trinity- Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple- all started in Britain's blues scene, and those roots are still discernible on their early records. In Lights Out, Graveyard appear to be more diverse within their style, although their sound has remained the same. The band used the same producer, the same recording studio and recorded again on analogue tape, giving the new album the same warm sound its predecessor attained. However, the musical direction adopted this time feels somewhat altered with respect to Hisingen Blues. Whereas that albums boogieblues rock was energetic most of the time and rarely harbored in more esoteric moments, Lights Out presents itself as a near-perfect balance between the two moods
