Info

The Complete Quartets With Sonny Clark is a 1997 compilation album by jazz guitarist Grant Green, collecting together all the tracks from a series of albums he recorded with pianist Sonny Clark in 1961 and '62. The original material was shelved until after Clark's death in 1963 and Grant's death in 1979, and was first issued only in Japan as the albums Nigeria, Oleo and Gooden's Corner. The collection also includes one additional tune, Nancy With the Laughing Face, and alternative takes of. The Complete Quartets With Sonny Clark - Grant Green. Лента с персональными рекомендациями и музыкальными новинками, радио, подборки на любой вкус, удобное управление своей коллекцией. Guitarist Grant Green and pianist Sonny Clark recorded together on five separate occasions during the 1961-1962 period, but virtually none of the music was released domestically until decades later. These performances were clearly lost in the shuffle, for the solos are of a consistently high quality, and the programs were well-paced and swinging. Green and Clark blend together well. Tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec joins their quartet for one session, and the final two numbers add Latin percussion. All of this music should be enjoyed by hard bop fans. Included are the Blue Note albums Gooden's Corner, Nigeria, Oleo, Born to Be Blue with Ike Quebec, and unissued tracks. Grant Green Artist, Sonny Clark Artist Format: Audio CD. 0 out of 5 stars 1 rating. Of course, anyone familiar with the work of Grant Green knows it is not possible for him to play anything without him naturally injecting a little soulful blues. The music throughout these five sessions is spectacular. The combo works well together, the solos are excellent, and the programs are diverse in a straight-ahead bop fashion with a strong focus on standards. The music is relaxed, gentle, warm, intimate, emotional, and accessible. Great late-night music. Grant Green was born in St. Louis on June 6, 1931, learned his instrument in grade school from his guitar-playing father and was playing professionally by the age of thirteen with a gospel group. He worked gigs in his home town and in East St. Louis, IL, until he moved to New York in 1960 at the suggestion of Lou Donaldson. Mosaic, the nations premier jazz reissue label, issued a wonderful collection The Complete Blue Note Recordings with Sonny Clark, featuring prime early 60s Green albums plus unissued tracks. I’ve always had a love hate relationship with Compilations and Best Of collections, though over the last twenty years these complete sets have been available, and they are hands down delicious.

That said, The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Grant Green with Sonny Clark are just a delight, every number takes me exactly where I wish to be with comfort and ease. The assemblage was compiled backing 1990, meaning that’s thirty year old technology, where I can only imagine that with today’s attributes, the sound compact discs reveal would me more rich and warm, as the music of Grant Green on vinyl is nearly hauntingly so.

I can find no faults here, especially with Sonny Clark riding shotgun, other than the fact that I miss the big vinyl album jackets. There is an equally good compilation, The Complete Quarter with Sonny Clark that should not be missed on any account. Matter of fact, nearly all of these compilation packages are hands down worth your time, though unless you’re a diehard fan, I’d steer clear of the archival assemblages.

Now, Sonny Clark plays on both of the afore mentioned collections, he’s a pianist and occasional organ musician of the highest caliber, one who brings a great deal to the table when he plays with Grant, as he has a nearly intuitive understanding of where Green is going and the emotion he wishes to bring to a number. Clark and Green share similar lives, both the good and bad aspects, so there was certainly an emotional and lifestyle connection that allowed them to sound like angles while playing together, much like Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz managed to do, where if you haven’t opened the door to the album Gerry Mulligan Meets Stan Getz In Hi Fi you certainly should.

There was a limited edition of this collection, five audiophile vinyl records that came in a mosaic box, though it instantly sold out, and is commanding prices of nearly $400US on the secondary market, so if you’ve got some cash to splash, this would be the place to lay it down. While this package was far too expensive for me, I have heard it in my own living room, where the sound quality simply left me breathless while melting me into the couch.
