Being a HUGE fan of Grace's work with Sly, Robbie, Badarou, Sadkin, I was exceited to hear about this album just before it came out. However, it lacked the magic that those 1980-1982 albums recorded at Compass Point had.A bit of a missed opportunity in my opinion.

When Grace Jones returned with her first album in almost 20 years with Hurricane I passed it by. How many artists return with great albums after such a hiatus? It was only when this edition with the dub version was released that I decided to get a copy. So how does Grace sound today? She has matured like a fine wine...one with full bodied, powerful flavour and diverse tastes for the senses.Hurricane is a stunning album showing an artist who is still at the top of her game. On William Blood, we get an anthemic and funky groove showing her sound at it's most playful yet sophisticated. Corporate Cannibal delivers some aggressive punch, electric rock influences as Grace rallies against the corporate machine. We then get I'm Crying (Mother's Tears), a slower, sensual tune which show's Grace's songwriting at it's best against a sumptuous reggae bassline. The title track perhaps best sums up the aspect of her character we all know about - the heavy digital bassline, urgent 'ripping up trees' vocal, cut-up effects and reverb make for a tense and intimidating listen. Love you to life is all about the beats, almost a drum n bass feel with searing vocals. The closing track sums up the album pretty well, a mix of the rough with the smooth, force but also vulnerability and symphonic beauty. The dub versions, are heavy and very well produced. Few other artists in the mainstream consciousness could have released such an uncompromising work.

I was looking forward to it when Hurricane came out, but never played it much. I also didn't like the cover artwork. When I heard about this coming out, I was looking forward to it more than the original album, and loved the artwork! Just like the Compass Point dubs, these reworkings of the Hurricane tracks are sublime. Outstanding work, great for a chill-out moment, this brings back memories of the good old dubs from the 80s. Highly recommended!

Interesting. I felt the exact opposite when I heard this. Did not harken back to the Compass Point magic days at all for me.
