Winter in America is a studio album by American vocalist Gil Scott-Heron and keyboardist Brian Jackson. It was recorded in September to October 1973 at D&B Sound Studio in Silver Spring, Maryland and released in May 1974 by Strata-East Records. Scott-Heron and Jackson produced the album in a stripped-down fashion, relying on traditional African and R&B sounds, while Jackson's piano-based arrangements were rooted in jazz and the blues. Gil Scott-Herons literary side was nurtured by his grandmother who introduced him to the poems and stories of Langston Hughes when he was a young boy. He was raised by her in Jackson, Tenn. where he read Hughes texts in the Chicago Defender, a black newspaper the old lady had delivered weekly. Inspired to start writing when he was in fifth grade, Gil filled notebooks with his own poems and prose as he began observing the world around him. Id do two-page things and gradually writing became like a rainy day pastime, he told writer Nat Hentoff in 1971. What I wrote got longer and longer. Gil Scott-Heron was at his most righteous and provocative on this album. The title cut was a moving, angry summation of the social injustices Scott-Heron felt had led the nation to a particularly dangerous period, while The Bottle was a great treatise on the dangers of alcohol abuse. He also offered his thoughts on Nixon's legacy with The H2O Gate Blues, a classic oral narrative. Gil Scott-Heron turned out during the '70s what may be the best body of overlooked work of the era. Winter in America followed the excellent Pieces of a Man and at least equaled the quality of that album. Winter in America kicks off with what was to become one of Gil's best-known and most often played tunes, The Bottle. The tune exemplifies the power of his work. He captures life in vivid, poetic images, and he joins the lyrics to street rhythms, in this case, Latin flavored. Listen free to Gil Scott-Heron Winter in America Peace Go With You.
