The recommandation of Jacob F Desvarieux in relation with the music of Gérard Lockel is totally wrong and in the exact opposite of the ideas of the Gwo Ka modènn. Beside being a musician Gérard Lockel have also developed a singular approach of the gwo ka in the purpose of the emancipation of the people from Guadeloupe. For him there are three levels of culture regarding the Guadeloupe and the overseas french territories in general; the deep original culture, the colonial culture and the french culture. We can add now another level: the capitalist culture. The idea of Gérard Lockel is to take the gwo ka considered as the deep original culture from Guadeloupe preserved of the french influences, to make it evolve in a modern expression. In the tradition gwo ka is played by percussions and voices. Lockel added melodic instruments like guitar but also trumpet, trombone, flute and even a drum. His second innovation consist of bringing the idea of atonal in the process of playing. This is a sort of opposition regarding the tonal music that is typically occidental. All the occidental music is based on tonal harmonies. For Gérard Lockel the gwo ka is a music that have been preserved from the colonial culture, not the biguine. We can consider the zouk in the same way, a sort of pleasant representation of the culture of the french overseas territories coming from the colonial influences. Even if many artists of zouk or biguine are very popular, some of them provide artistic performances that could have satisfied the horrible managers of the colonial expositions of the early XX century. if I could give a name of an equivalent of Gérard Lockel i would do it with pleasure but I don’t know any musician who have walked in the same way, it doesn’t mean that no musician exist in this way but personally I don’t know. For sure Jacob F desvarieux is not, it is just a basic zouk record with no particular interest.
