With Collins as their new frontman, the band decided not to pursue the stylish, jagged postmodernism of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - a move that Gabriel would do in his solo career - and instead returned to the English eccentricity of Selling England by the Pound for its next effort, A Trick of the Tail. The album was a commercial success in both the United Kingom and in the United States, reaching respectable peak positions of 3 and 31 on both charts, respectively. This album is literally a masterpiece of its time, even if it was minus one Peter Gabriel. It still feels that Genesis had some guts left in them. There are many grand songs on this album, but few make some misses. This is practically the first album where you can hear Hackett's guitar playing on every song (save for The Lamb). Each member's musicianship flourishes on this album, which makes it a great transitional piece for Genesis.Dance On A Volcano: Ah, that classic opening. Grand singing here from Phil, and his drumming is incredibly complex on this song. This song can't be divided into section, let alone all the themes and segments that vary. I can't tell if it's Banks playing some of those riffs later in the song or Hackett. Not to mention the REALLY fast playing that comes in the breakdown section of the song. Good way to start an album.Entangled: A very empty song. But quite the joy to read. Warning: Do not listen to the last 2 minutes of it while in a dark setting. Very eerie song with connotation of being unable to help oneself when ill. Nice vocal layering on the song and Bank's keyboard usage for the rest of the song (Note how he uses choral sounds from Lamb, Foxtrot, and Selling).Squonk: We kick to high-gear with the pounding and churning opening of Squonk. This song is about as prog as the album gets (along with Robbery, and A Trick of the Tail). Good rhythms, pacing, and story flow. Hackett's messing around with that pedal again... And Rutherford with that bass pedal... But this song is a standout on the album.Mad Man Moon: Oh yes! How good Squonk was! What could they hold in store for us next? *slips on a banana peel* What the heck is this song? 7:40?! When is this song over?! I seriously can't stand this song to a certain degree just for the fact that the song has little to no memorable points, except maybe for the intro. Mad Man Moon could easily cost this album a whole point... but I'll spare it because Banks isn't that terrible...(EDIT: After many more listens, I have finally taken a liking to this song. It isn't half bad and the theme is very memorable.)Robbery, Assault & Battery: Hey? Didn't Peter leave the band? This song doesn't sound like that. Practically a moniker of all that Gabriel did, Robbery, Assault & Battery will be a key point of this album. The storyline is clear and vivid, not muddled by sound in the background and weird time signatures. And we go off into syncopated instrumentation. Interesting...Ripples...: Classic guitar, here we come! The chorus is easily memorable and nice to sing along to and listen. The rest... not so much besides the verses. Not much I can pull from this song besides Bank's playing...A Trick of the Tail: Yes! A more wide variety approach to a song. These extra percussion remind me of I Know What I Like. A nice little story about devils and hiding and whatnot (really it's just a general theme). The fade out works on this song, short and sweet.Los Endos: INSTRUMENTAL!!! Now we're talking complex rhythms again. Phil, you never cease to amaze on the drums. We get some repeats, some fast passages. A nice segue section leading us into reprises of Dance on a Volcano and Squonk (reminiscent of Selling England). Lastly, in the fade out, a little tribute to Gabriel and we're done.A good show of an album. Little tweaks here and it would have been perfect. But all and all, it worked. 5.
