This Is Our Music is the third and final studio album by American indie rock band Galaxie 500, released in 1990 on Rough Trade Records. Given the relative merits of This Is Our Music, a fine album that sometimes sounds sleepy instead of dreamy, the fact that Galaxie 500 called it quits in spring 1991 is no tragedy. Some bands are meant to last for three albums this was one of them. All involved would go on to do good things, including Kramer, who carried his sonic innovations into Low's early work. The live album, Copenhagen, which is heavy on songs from This Is Our Music and in almost every case improves upon them, turns out to be the ideal closing chapter. Galaxie 500, to this day, will always hold some special little nostalgic place in the corner of my heart. There's something in the simple reverbed out G, C, D chord progressions that they always friggin' pulled off that were virtually alike, yet constructed so differently through distinct melodies and unique, swishing, off-kilter drumming. From a technical perspective, This Is Our Music is arguably their best record. Flutes, synthesizer, and higher production values are spaced throughout, hinting at what the band might have become if they stuck around. The opener, Fourth of July is crystal smooth dream pop gold.
