The Gala Lads is a barbershop quartet that won the 1962 SPEBSQSA international competition. From The Top In Barbershop You've Never Heard It So Good 1964 LP. From little-heard releases by artists youre familiar with Steve Miller Band, Jerry Lee Lewis to obscure rockers the Insect Trust, Autosalvage and even one group that never existed - here are just a few acclaimed, yet forgotten LPs. From the same group that brought the late Sixties the feel-good anthem Get Together millennials: the opening of Nirvana's Territorial Pissings, Elephant Mountain bridges the gap between the last days of psychedelia and the outbreak of country-rock that had afflicted artists like the Byrds and Neil Young. Youd think wed have learned our lesson by now. Everything and yet nothing much has changed. This is broadly the reason why the best album released this decade in Ireland is one youve probably never heard of. This is why the band RollersSparkers continue to plough along in night and day jobs while their effervescent third LP languishes in obscurity. You wont even find it in the bargain bins as it never got a proper release. This is like digging a hole and shoveling our jewels underground in case someone takes notice. Its a waste, a crying shame, a scandal and an unfunny joke. Highlights include Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire hilarious, the unexpected Who Needs the Peace Corps, Mr. Green Genes, and The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue, and an extended rendition of The Torture Never Stops that includes the theme from the TV show Bonanza and a Swaggart version of Lonesome Cowboy Burt.
