Info
The Astaire Story is a 1952 album by Fred Astaire. The album was conceived of and produced by Norman Granz, the founder of Clef Records and later Verve Records, who was also responsible for the Jazz at the Philharmonic concerts, at which all of the musicians on the album had performed. The album's song selection provides an overview of Astaire's singing career although Astaire also demonstrates his tap dancing on three tracks and there is one informal instrumental Jam session. This two-CD set is something special for it features Astaire with six members of Jazz at the Philharmonic: tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips, trumpeter Charlie Shavers, pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Alvin Stoller. Astaire sings 34 swing standards many of which he had originally introduced in movies, dances on three ad-lib numbers, and sits out on the instrumental Jam Session the musicians have plenty of opportunities to stretch out. The project spanned Astaire's then 20-year long movie career presenting a selection of songs by composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Cole Porter, which he had premiered in his various films in the 1930s and 1940s. Produced by Norman Granz, this is Fred Astaire with a Jazz at the Philharmonic All-Stars band: Oscar Peterson pians, Barney Kessel guitar, Charley Shavers trumpet, Flip Phillips tenor sax, Ray Brown bass and Alvin Stoller drums. The Astaire Story, the most innovative and revered jazz recording in the storied career of Fred Astaire, will get an expanded reissue on 20 October 2017. The album reissue will be presented in a novel way, reassembled to give it the shape of a soundtrack. The two Blues bookend the release, with the Jam Session serving as an intermission. Astaire talks a little and sings through the recording, on which he is joined by Peterson and a group comprising Flip Phillips on tenor saxophone, trumpeter Charlie Shavers, Barney Kessel on guitar, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Alvin Stoller.
