The words electronic music still primarily conjure mental landscapes of perfectly smooth surfaces and exactingly located beats arranged with a computer’s precision. The Buenos Aires trio Farmacia posits a very different dimension of electronic sound on its new album, via a stirringly rough aesthetic that takes on additional personalities with each listen.

The howling space-storm of opening cut “Ranelagh” suggests randomness, its undulating waves littered with what might be described as sonic events (gutter electronics would seem like an insult, though the album credits mention ingredients like “strange voice” and “eggs,” as well as computers and analog synths). It’s on the following track, “Mañas,” that Farmacia’s intentions, arcane though they may be, emerge: Over a simple one-two beat, the trio steadily introduces a series of hissing and ringing patterns, blanketing the sound with occasional bursts of contrasting, pristinely hi-fi vocal samples and ending with a tingling loop inspired by Italian horror-film soundtracks. The music seems impossibly simple yet also conceived by higher beings (or, given the band’s name, perhaps just high beings). This notion gets stronger with the swinging, percussive “Doctor Krupa” and “Golondrino,” which alternately suggests marching songs for retrofuturistic androids and a brutally efficient Rube Goldberg contraption at work. From one end to the other, this is an engaging, challenging, fun album. — Mike Wolf
