Eric Norman Thompson was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, the son of George Henry and Anne Thompson, and grew up Rudgwick, Sussex, attending Collyer's School, Horsham. He trained to be an actor at the Old Vic acting school in London and joined the Old Vic theatre company in 1952. He worked mostly for the BBC, and was a presenter of the children's television programme Play School in the 1960s. He was best known as the narrator of The Magic Roundabout, for which he wrote the English-language scripts. The Magic Roundabout was an English-language children's television programme that ran from 1965 to 1977. It used the footage of the French stop motion animation show Le Manège enchanté, but with completely different scripts and characters. The French series, created by Serge Danot with the help of Ivor Wood and Wood's French wife, Josiane, was broadcast from 1964 to 1974 on ORTF Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française. The BBC originally rejected translating the series because it was charming. Narrated by Eric Thompson, this is a reconstruction of a Magic Roundabout episode, using the video footage from the French volume 1 VHS and the English audio from the 1971 UK Magic Roundabout.
