Info
Don Covay hadn't seen a lot of chart activity since the '60s, but he returned in 1973 with the comeback album Super Dude. Single releases Overtime Man, I Was Checkin' Out She Was Checkin' In, and Somebody's Been Enjoying My Home were all worthy of high recognition, but only I was Checkin', a classic about a guy cheating on his woman while she's cheating on him at the same motel, made any real noise. Leave Him, Pts. 1-2 is another good gritty track, but Mercury spoiled it by putting the first part on. Album: Super Dude I. Have This Want This. Album Info This Release. Visitor rating. Super Dude was Don Covay's only nationally charting LP, reaching 45 on the Billboard soul albums chart in the late summer of 1973, largely on the strength of the stupendous single I Was Checkin' In, She Was Checkin' Out, the ultimate infidelity song. It was the third biggest soul single of his career and his biggest pop crossover hit ever. Recorded brilliantly in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and produced superbly by Covay, this was among the last '60s-style southern soul albums to have success as a new release this deep into the 1970s.
