Info
The Winter in Lisbon is a soundtrack album for the European film of the same name directed by José A. Zorrilla composed and performed by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in 1990 and released on the Milan label. The album represents the final studio recordings by the trumpet legend. The Guardian review stated it's a full-on jazz album, with Gillespie fronting a fine band. A fine way to remember a few. Songs in album Dizzy Gillespie - The Winter In Lisbon 1990. Dizzy Gillespie - Magic Summer Orchestral Version. Dizzy Gillespie - Lisbon. This CD, featuring Dizzy Gillespie playing on the soundtrack of The Winter in Lisbon a film never properly distributed, is only of minor interest. He wrote the nine themes and Slide Hampton put together the arrangements, but, as with most soundtracks, the music sounds incomplete without the picture. Also, Gillespie's playing at this late date in his life was quite erratic. The Winter in Lisbon 1990. Album by Dizzy Gillespie. Opening Theme. was sampled in. Belső Erő by Artoscsaba 2005. Recorded in '90, three years before Dizzy Gillespie's death at age 76, this reissued album was a soundtrack for a movie of the same name. Never released in the US, the film shows the jazz legend in the role of a famous jazz musician. The compositions are by Gillespie and executive producer Charles Fishman, along with a then-unknown young Panamanian pianist, Danilo Perez. Arrangements are by Slide Hampton. As compositions some of the tunes stand on their own, independent of the movie, as well-crafted works Fishman's ballad Magic Summer, in particular. The biggest Gillespie recorded highlight prior to that was 1989's vivid duet with another genius of the bop movement, Max Roach. Now comes the record in between, Gillespie's music for the unreleased movie The Winter in Lisbon, in which he also had an acting part. This could have been just a set of soupy orchestral music that doesn't work without the film, maybe featuring the composer's trumpet as a piece of glitzy embroidery. Instead, it's a full-on jazz album, with Gillespie fronting a fine band that includes pianist Danilo Pérez, bassist George Mraz and drummer Grady Tate
