Made in Japan is a double live album by English rock band Deep Purple, recorded during their first tour of Japan in August 1972. It was originally released in December 1972, with a US release in April 1973, and became a commercial and critical success. The band were well known for their strong stage act, and had privately recorded several shows, or broadcast them on radio, but were unenthusiastic about recording a live album until their Japanese record company decided it would be good for publicity. It's a Twenty-first anniversary collectors 3CD set of Made in Japan. All 21 tracks were mixed in 1993. Both are available on Made in Japan Also missing are the encores from the 16th Black Night is available on the Listen, Learn, Read On box set, and Lucille is available on Made in Japan CD 2: The encores from the 17th Black Night and Speed King are available on Made in Japan CD 2: The Encores. The tracks in bold letters were released on Made in Japan in 1972. The second show, over half of which did make it onto Made in Japan, burns brilliantly and white hot from start to finish, and there are other new highlights as well, including the wailing encore Black Night. Only you can decide if you need three 20-minute versions of Space Truckin', but for fans this is a valuable set - not only for comparative listening Jon Lord never plays the intro to Child in Time the same way twice, but also for presenting more of the band at and near the height of its powers.
