Memento, subtitled The Very Best of Dead Can Dance, is a compilation from previous albums of Dead Can Dance, released 25 October 2005, shortly after the US tour of the band September 17th to October 12th. Dead Can Dance went down in acrimonious flames in 1998, but that didn't stop its founders, Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard, from getting together for a sold-out world tour in 2005. No new music has come out of the reunion yet, but in the meantime they've released a collection that encapsulates the wonder of this remarkable and influential group. Emerging on the 4AD label in the early 1980s, Dead Can Dance sounded like a gothic nun and troubadour lost in time. Although there's nothing new here and no tracks appear from their first album, Memento serves as a nearly perfect introduction to an influential band that still draws a fervent audience. Apparently the dead still can dance. Memento, subtitled The Very Best of Dead Can Dance, is a compilation album by Dead Can Dance, released 25 October 2005, shortly after their US by Dead Can Dance. 15 songs. 2005 year. Format mp3. Just about any Dead Can Dance fan would agree with most of the choices, but one key misstep is that the self-titled debut goes unrepresented, and there is a pronounced slant toward 1993's Into the Labyrinth and the following year's Toward the Within. As such, this could be seen as an unacknowledged successor to A Passage in Time, an anthology released by Ryko in 1991. Dead Can Dance, along with label mates Cocteau Twins and the original Clan of Xymox, helped define the 4AD sound in the early '80s. And that sound doesn't lend itself to singles so much as to moods, and the deep cuts often hide an album's greatest riches. Because of that, Dead Can Dance is a whole album experience. A best of collection is really only a sampler for a band like this, so the question becomes, Is this a strong sampler and, being the band's third US retrospective, is it even warranted In the early '80s, Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard migrated f. Memento is the fourth Dead Can Dance compilation and the third since Perry and Gerrard parted ways in 1999, but it's the only single-disc set spanning their entire career. Actually, entire career is not quite accurate, since it avoids the classically Goth debut album completely and focuses heavily on two early '90s albums that coincided with the band's breakthrough in the United States. Such a focus makes sense considering that Memento was conceived partly as a souvenir for those who came out for their recent reunion tour. Dead Can Dance was an intense band requiring.
