Meet Uncle Moose. Nobody's ever seen - or heard - him before except his good friend Dave Van Ronk, the folk singer. Uncle Moose loves to cook. He loves old jazz and blues and swingy music from the 1920s and '30s. And he loves jug bands. "Hey, I've got an an idea," he told Dave one day. "Let's get Luke and Billy and Jay and Mark and record a jug band version of Peter and the Wolf. And let's do some old tunes too. (And maybe a new one about me). And let's eat spaghetti." So they did. And here it is.

Dave Van Ronk's coarse, warm voice makes him an ideal narrator. Van Ronk's guitar and Billy Novick's clarinet are terrific throughout. Possibly the best children's record I've ever heard. Dave Van Ronk June 30, 1936 February 10, 2002 was a folk singer born in Brooklyn, New York, who settled in Greenwich Village, New York City, and was nicknamed the Mayor of MacDougal Street. He was best known as a pioneer of the acoustic blues revival, but his work ranged from old English ballads to Bertolt Brecht, rock, New Orleans jazz, and swing. He was a pioneer of instrumental ragtime guitar, as well as an early supporter of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, among many others. Van Ronk was very influential on the music scene in New York City in the 1960s. His musical read more. Dave Van Ronk, the gravel-voiced, ragtime-picking patriarch of the Greenwich Village folk scene, died on Sunday in Manhattan. He was 65 and lived in Greenwich Village. The cause was colon cancer, said his manager, Mitchell Greenhill. He narrated a version of ''Peter and the Wolf'' with the Prokofiev score arranged for jug band in 1990 and made an album of Bertolt Brecht songs in 1992. He appears on a compilation of performances from Fast Folk, the long-running Greenwich Village songwriters' workshop, which has just been released on Smithsonian Folkways. Dave was always extremely interested in the next generation,'' said his wife, Andrea Vuocolo, who survives him.
