Sweet Charity is a musical with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon. It was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse starring his wife and muse Gwen Verdon alongside John McMartin. It is based on the screenplay for the Italian film Nights of Cabiria. However, whereas Federico Fellini's black-and-white film concerns the romantic ups-and-downs of an ever-hopeful prostitute, in the musical the central character is a dancer-for-hire at a Times Square dance hall. The wonderful score for the 1966 Broadway musical Sweet Charity was written by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields. The result was Fields' longest running show in her lifetime and Coleman's biggest hit so far, a show that played 608 performances starting on January 29, 1966. The biggest initial hit from the score was Where Am I Going, which was recorded by Barbra Streisand, though Peggy Lee hit the easy listening charts with Big Spender, Tony Bennett with Baby, Dream Your Dream, and Sylvia Syms with There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This.
