Info

The Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7, was composed by Clara Wieck, better known as Clara Schumann after her later marriage to Robert Schumann. She completed her only finished piano concerto in 1835, and played it first that year with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, conducted by Felix Mendelssohn. Clara Wieck was an accomplished concert pianist, trained by her father Friedrich Wieck. She was already making international tours at age eleven and composed piano pieces for her recitals. Two of Clara Schumann's most popular works are presented on this disc from Naxos featuring Francesco Nicolosi: her Piano Concerto and her Piano Trio. Unfortunately, the sound quality hampers both performances. The sound is distant and echoey - understandably so, given that it was recorded in a church - but it is also shallow and flattens the distinction between forte and piano, making the dynamic shadings much less meaningful. The Piano Concerto, written when Clara was only fourteen, is an apprentice work. It feels awkward and cobbled together. Even the first entrance of the piano sounds diffident because the first notes it plays are the passage-work that comprises the second half of the work's initial theme. It's almost as if the pianist has to make its entrance through a side door. In this performance pianist Francesco Nicolosi does as much as can be expected with the work, and he is ably, if just a bit tentatively, accompanied by the Alma Mahler Sinfonietta, conducted by Stefania Rinaldi. The Sinfonietta is an orchestra made up entirely of women musicians. Клара Шуман. Schumann, Clara Wieck : Trio for Piano and Strings in G minor, Op. Rinaldi, Stefania. playing is deep-toned and tractable and, in conjunction with Stefania Rinaldi who eschews strident orchestral attack, finds a vein of melancholy in the music. He also ably balances the implied duality of the 'Romanze' in which the marking 'con grazia' conflicts somewhat with the additional 'La melodia ben marcato e legato'
