Charlélie Couture is one of the most important French artists of the Eighties. He has combined the country's rich song tradition with the wider influences of jazz, blues and rock. The mix, however, is wholly individual and distinct : Charlélie Couture is an unique talent.

Couture lives in Nancy, the city in north-est France where he was born 28 years ago. He left home when he was 17, travelling through the country and taking on a variety of casual jobs - docker, storekeeper, postman, waiter - while at the same time honing an embryonic talent as a songwriter.

Returning to Nancy, Couture enrolled in art college to study film and painting. It was during this period that one of his friends, the poet Pierre Eliane, suggested Charlélie should record some of his songs. The result was an album, called "12 chansons dans la sciure", recorded in a local Nancy studio. Only a thousand copies were pressed : today the album is a much prized collectors' item in France.

The LP, despites its limited distribution, brought Couture to the attention of the French recording industry. He refused, however, to leave Nancy for Paris and instead recorded a second album, 'Le Pecheur', for a small independant label. That record, released in 1979, attracted rave critical applause and brought Couture to the attention of Island records.

The following year Charlélie Couture became the first French artist to sign on Island. His first album, called 'Pochette', was released in February 1981. It was Couture's first hit : and one of his newly-acquired fans was Michael Zilkha, founder of New York's ZE label.

Zilkha believed Couture to be one of the finest lyricists he has ever heard. Eager to work with him, Zilkha volunteered his services as a producer. The result was an album called 'Poemes Rock', released in October 1981 as the prelude to a 40-date French tour. It was Charlélie Couture's first gold album.

It was followed, in 1982, by 'Quoi Faire', an album which went gold within a month of release.
