American record guide - Page 124 Peter Hugh Reed, Information Access Company - 2000 Concerto Palatino, founded in 1986 by cornettists Bruce Dickey and Charles Toet, has made a number of outstanding recordings and was one of the first cornetto-sackbut ensembles to sound truly first-rate. Orchestra: Concerto Palatino. Conductor: Bruce Dickey, Charles Toet. Composer: Francesco Cavalli. Audio CD November 21, 1995. While not attempting to reconstruct a full Vespers service, Bruce Dickey and Charles Toet nevertheless arranged the individual musical items in their proper liturgical context, complete with plainchant antiphonas and instrumental canzonas. Following Andrew Parrott's groundbreaking one-voice-per-part OVPP recording of Monteverdi's Vespers, Dickey and Toet adopted the same approach: they hired only eight singers exactlly enough to fill two SATB choirs, and used cornets to double the voices in ripieno settings. The operas of Francesco Cavalli have earned him a secure place among the masters of the 17th century, yet he has remained almost completely unknown as a composer of sacred music. While the greater part of his time and energy was undoubtedly devoted to the 32 operas which he produced in Venice, Cavalli nonetheless pursued a constant and parallel career in sacred music which spanned 60 years of activity at St. It is no more and no less a single unified musical work than are Monteverdis 1610 Vespro della Beata Vergine, nor can it be, since the liturgy has its own formal requirements going far beyond the music. Theres good reason it doesnt vanish for long: Its simply the best version of Cavallis reconstructed Marian Vespers-underscore that if you accept the assertion of the Concerto Palatinos leadership that one-part-to-a-singer is a natural fit to the piece. I can understand those who might disagree with that approach, given the size and sheer magnificence of sacred choirs in Venice at the midpoint of the 17th century
