Notes

This version does not have the oatmeal paper wrapper, but a large sticker on the upper left hand corner of the outer plastic foil, with a similar dark brown background. The sticker has the band name and album title with the lettering as it appeared on the original brown wrapper, some text, the track list in a different lettering, and a different though similar blue drawing. Apart from this packaging, this version is an exact copy of the original.

The sleeve is full-color varnish-print finished, with the cover shot oriented 90 degrees and overlapping onto back - being a full-length photo of Vliet playing his musette. The inside spread has a similar shot and a self-portrait sketch of John French to accompany his extensive liner notes.

Vinyl has pale yellow labels with tracks in hand-written style and discs numbered A, B, C, D.

Original material: Recorded November, 1967 at TTG Studios, Hollywood, California.
Produced for Kama Sutra Productions.

This production mastered at Sundazed Studios, Coxsackie, NY.

(The credit for the engineer is incorrect for one of the owners of TTG [an acronym for 'Two Terrible Guys'], Ami Hadani and Tom Hidley).

Mastered from the original analog recordings and pressed in 180 gram vinyl.

Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band signed to A&M and released two singles in 1966. The first was a version of Bo Diddley's Diddy Wah Diddy that became a regional hit in Los Angeles. The followup, Moonchild written by David Gates, later of the band Bread was less well received. In overview, the works for the double album in this period were intended to be packaged in a plain brown wrapper, with a strictly personal over-stamp and addressed in a manner that could have connotations of drug content, pornographic or illicit material As per the small ads of the time: It comes to you in a plain brown wrapper. I think all Beefheart fans know that the planned second album was to be a double livestudio effort called It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper or It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper Marked Personal. Instead we ended up with the wonderful but according to Don, badly compromised Strictly Personal, to be followed three years later, with other tracks from the sessions, by Mirror Man. It was taken onstage in a small club Thee Experience in 1969 and Don is wearing the Trout Mask hat and coat and playing a sax. Theres a similar photo on the inside of the cover. Recent Listening Trend. The near complete sessions of Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band's sadly unfinished album, It Comes To You In A Plain Brown Wrapper. Recorded the release of 1967s Safe as Milk on the Buddah record label, Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band decided that their next project was going to be a double album entitled It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper. For an unknown reason, the project was abandoned and the material Beefheart considered as the better half was re-recorded and put onto Strictly Personal, which was released on the label Blue Thumb in 1968. However, after releasing two more albums on Straight, Buddah decided in 1971 that they would release four of the outtakes from the project as though it were a studio album. Originally, Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band's second album was intended to be a double-album set called It Comes to You in a Plain Brown Wrapper. Although 1968's Strictly Personal has the same artwork that was mooted for the double album, it's a single disc. As part of the same post-Trout Mask Replica closet-cleaning that led to Buddah the parent company of Blue Thumb Records, which released Strictly Personal reissuing Safe As Milk as Dropout Boogie in the U. in 1970, the label released Mirror Man, the second disc that was intended for the Plain Brown Wrap.
