It is the last Don Van Vliet recorded before abruptly retiring from music to devote himself to a career as a painter. It spent two weeks in the UK album charts, reaching number 90, but failed to make the Billboard Top 200. While Ice Cream for Crow was being produced, Herb Cohen had settled his lawsuit with Frank Zappa over the latter withholding the master tapes to Captain Beefheart's. It's a last entertaining blast of wigginess from one of the few truly independent artists in late 20th century pop music, with humor, skill, and style all still intact as even the song titles like Semi-Multicoloured Caucasian and Cardboard Cutout Sundown show. With the Magic Band turning out more choppy rhythms, unexpected guitar lines, and outré arrangements, Captain Beefheart lets everything run wild as always, with successful results. Listen album. This is only the third album I've heard by Captain Beefheart, the first being Bongo Fury and the second being Trout Mask Replica, but this one is already a whole lot more digestible. It is undoubtedly a Beefheart album though, as tracks like Hey Garland I Dig Your Tweed Coat will showcase. But there are also some more traditional sounding songs, like the title track. Ice Cream for Crow, Captain Beefhearts final album, is often regarded as one of his most cohesive and strongest efforts. Like his two previous releases, Shiny Beast Bat Chain Puller and Doc at the Radar Station, this album contains some material originally written for the aborted Bat Chain Puller album in 1976. Ice Cream for Crow can thus be viewed as a culmination of that initial spirit.
