While it forms part to the the regular reissue series by The Grey Area of Mute, CABS14CD is a bit of an odd choice, juxtaposing two radically different eras in the Cabaret Voltaire catalogue. Mute did something similar with the very first (now deleted) CABS1CD - a single release of "Nag Nag Nag" combining the 1978 single (the a-side only) with the slightly later John Robie remixes of "Yashar". Whatever the reasons, the chronological aspect (or absence of it that is) undermines the contents in both these releases' cases.

The first five tracks on CABS14CD (originally from a 1986 ltd edition of "The Drain Train" 12") by the time they were originally released, showcase a certain lack of ideas, repeating the established formula and patterns explored on CV's two proper studio albums - "Micro-phonies" and especially "The Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord". The beatbox is still irresistible and merciless though - "Menace" definitely shines the brightest of the lot but the "Drain Train's" main problem is, the duo often sounds like going nowhere particular with it, doodling with the over-stretched funk-ish material.

The live part originally dates from a 1982 charity concert for the purpose of raising money to buy and deliver medical supplies for the civilian hospital in Czestochova, Poland. Originally the sleeve featured the "Solidanosc" logo on the front, which is removed from the CD reissue - even "The Pressure Company" is obscured as such - for the sake of this live performance, CV used the name for the occasion, helped out by Nort and Eric Random, delivering a 4-track set, the majority of which originally forms the second part of "2x45", while "Vitrious China" is a renamed live rendition of "Jazz the Glass". The main problem here is the poor quality of the recording - although the energy of the performance cannot be underestimated but serves only mere documentary purpose in case you want to have a peek.

This is a re-release in CD format of two very different LP's: «The Drain Train» is clearly a more mature (and therefore less experimental) release that contains 3 versions of «Shakedown» plus «Menace» and «Electro-Motive», which are all somewhat disco/pop oriented (which doesn't necessarily mean that they're not good...)
But «Live In Sheffield» is a totally different experience as it's tracks really show CV's full potential as the most innovative and experimental band that possibly ever existed. My personal pick goes to «War Of Nerves» which is a really dark/powerful/experimental track that totally blows you up! The "Live" aspect also contributes for the overall environment: the background noises and both crowd and performers' enthusiastic spirit really adds up to an incredible exciting experience that could only be surpassed if you were really there listening to their performance.
Those lucky bastards...
