Bernard Buddy Rich September 30, 1917 April 2, 1987 was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time and was known for his virtuoso technique, power, and speed. He performed with Tommy Dorsey, Harry James and Count Basie, and led a big band. Rich was born in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York, to Jewish-American parents Bess Skolnik and Robert Rich, both vaudevillians. As a kid, when he was at a restaurant with his parents, he used. I read in a Buddy Rich interview one time where the interviewer asked why Buddy didn't have his drums custom made as so many other name drummers do. Buddy's answer was to the effect It all boils down to one thing, can you play the damn drum, or not Too many kids today buy a computer with some software and all of a sudden they think they're musicians. It is without a doubt that Buddy Rich was THE MASTER of the drum set of the 20th Century and in my opinion is the master of the drum set in the 21st Century. He is widely considered to be one of the best drummers of all time, known for his virtuoso technique, speed, and power. From 1966 until his death, he led a successful big band in an era when the popularity of big bands had waned from their peak in the 1930s and 40s. One of Buddy Richs last requests to his daughter, Cathy, was to keep his band working, his music alive, and to do something for young people. Cathy decided that an annual memorial concert seemed the way to go. The first sellout memorial concert was in 1988 at Carnegie Hall in New York. Since then, shows have followed in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Boston with the whos who of the drumming world taking part. Artists to grace the stage in previous years have included Mel Tormé, Joe Williams, Stan Getz, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta and Dennis Chambers
