SPARS Code: ADD. The Horenstein is undoubtedly a tremendous performance, tightly structured, powerful forward momentum, brilliantly played, everything in place. The orchestral sound has a slightly fierce quality, something I notice on other Horenstein recordings with the LSO, but which I don't recall from hearing him live I didn't hear him with the LSO or in Bruckner. The LSO brass predictably take no prisoners in the climaxes, though they play beautifully in quieter passages as well. The vigor of the first movement proves quite compelling, given Bruckners penchant for alternating periods of motoric, driving sound and moments of floating repose.
