Affectionately called MaBrrr by her fans, she was sometimes described as the Queen of African Pop, the Madonna of The Townships or simply as The Black Madonna. She was named after American singer Brenda Lee. Her father died when she was two, and with the help of her mother, a pianist, she started earning money by singing for tourists. The group's classic line up included Brenda Fassie, Desmond Malotana, Dumisane Ngubeni, Job Fats Mlangeni, David Mabaso and Rufus Klaas. The group rose to fame after the release of their debut maxi-single Weekend Special in 1983. The single became the best selling record in South Africa with sales of over 200,000 copies. The group was initially a backing band for another popular South African duo Blondie & Pappa until a young Brenda Fassie was brought in as a lead singer.
