This song helped Brown establish an image as a bad boy and an outcast. My Prerogative was the second single from Bobby Browns breakthrough sophomore album Dont Be Cruel. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award and peaked at 1 on both the Billboard Hot Black Singles and Billboard Hot 100 charts. After completing production for the Dont Be Cruel album with L. Reid and Babyface, Bobby wanted a more aggressive song and enlisted the production of Teddy Riley, leader of the New Jack Swing movement.
