Info
The Delta Sweete is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Bobbie Gentry. It was released on February 5, 1968, by Capitol Records. The album was produced by Kelly Gordon. One week after Ode to Billie Joe concluded its four-week reign at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, Gentry returned home to the South. September 30, 1967 was declared Bobbie Gentry Day in Houston, Mississippi, which is the county seat of Chickasaw County. It was estimated that 5,000 people attended. Life magazine. She expanded on the world she built with that song on 1968's full-length The Delta Sweete, but unlike Ode to Billie Joe, it was not a huge hit its pioneering symphonic-country-folk-pop didn't even crack the top 100 of Billboard's Top LPs chart. Fortunately, the acclaim for Gentry's work grew as the years passed, and Mercury Rev's Bobbie Gentry's the Delta Sweete Revisited reflects her latter-day status as a country icon. Other Versions. A loosely-formed concept album of sorts, Delta further explores the vagaries of the Mississippi Delta country of Ode to Billy Joe. Here, Gentry evokes the county fairs and family reunions that would have been events during Gentrys girlhood, along with the small, everyday moments that made Ode to Billy Joe such a classic. The strength of The Delta Sweete makes the case for Bobbie Gentry as one of the most underrated and largely forgotten songwriters of the late 1960s-early 1970s era.
