Info
13 is the sixth studio album by English alternative rock band Blur, released on 15 March 1999. Continuing the stylistic shift away from the Britpop sound of the band's early career, 13 explores experimental, psychedelic and electronic music. Recording took place from June to October 1998 in London and Reykjavík. The album marks a departure of the band's longtime producer, Stephen Street, with his role being filled by William Orbit. Relationships between the band members were reported to be strained. 13 tracks 66:44. 13 is the sixth album by English alternative rock band Blur, released in March 1999. The album reached number one in the UK Albums Chart and number 80 in the US Billboard 200. 13 spawned three hit singles: Tender, Coffee & TV and No Distance Left to Run. Recording history: 13 sees the band moving further away from their Britpop past into more cerebral and denser musical territory. Some of the songs, however, are evocative of songs from their previous efforts, such as Bugman, Coffee & TV, 1992 and Optigan 1. Much of the album was inspired by Damon Albarn's breaku. Blur fits the mold of the monosyllabic, schwa- voweled noun system of Brit-rock nomenclature- Pulp, Bush, Lush, Suede. Now, after nearly a decade, Blur have grown comfortable with their image and talents. Despite Graham Coxon's fingerprints, 13 is Damon Albarn's record from start to finish. From the opening epic, Tender, in which Albarn delivers the line Love's the greatest thing that we have with a sarcastic croon after admiting that his heart screwed up his life, to the beautiful, stripped closer, No Distance Left to Run, in which he sighs with resignation, It's over You don't need to tell me I hope you're with. 13 also marks the first time in Blurs career that they deliberately decided against having Stephen Street as a producer, as the band, and Albarn in particular, wanted to pursue a different sound that would be unlike anything they had done before. They instead used William Orbit, whose remix of Movin' On had impressed the band. Like its predecessors, the album was a huge commercial hit, being their fourth consecutive UK 1 album and spawning three top 20 singles. Critically it was much more divisive than previous efforts, with some praising their experimentation and others finding it to. taken from the 1999 album 13 including the singles Tender, Bugman, Coffee & TV and No Distance Left To Blur album. 1999 studio album by Blur. Studio album by. 13 was released on 15 March 1999 and entered the UK Albums Chart at number one, making it Blur's fourth consecutive studio album to reach the top spot. The album was later certified Platinum. 13 also reached number one in Norway and charted within the top 20 in many other countries. The album produced three singles Tender, Coffee & TV and No Distance Left to Run which charted at number 2, number 11 and number 14 respectively on the UK Singles Chart. Blur's penitence for Brit-pop continues with the aptly named 13, which deals with star-crossed situations like personal and professional breakups with Damon Albarn's longtime girlfriend, Justine Frischmann of Elastica, and the group's longtime producer, Stephen Street. Building on Blur's un-pop experiments, the group's ambitions to expand their musical and emotional horizons result in a half-baked baker's dozen of songs, featuring some of their most creative peaks and self-indulgent valleys. Damon Albarns romantic woes surface in Tender, Trimm Trabb, and No Distance Left to Run, three of the bands most somberly elegant melodies. The band embrace Pavements murky guitar riffs on Swamp Song and 1992, while producer William Orbit helps them weave strands of electronica into the lo-fi racket of Battle and Trailerpark. Album description: Marking their ten years as a band, 13 is the sound of Blur becoming, according to Damon, completely free. Lyrically, the songs are rooted in personal and emotional changes, most notably on two of the singles Tender & the heartbreaking No Distance Left To Run. The album also sees song writing contributions by Graham Coxon, most notably on Coffee & TV where the guitarist takes lead vocal duties. Album Store: Official Blur St
