Heaven and Hell is the ninth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released on 25 April 1980. It is the first Black Sabbath album to feature vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who replaced original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne in 1979. Produced by Martin Birch, the album was a commercial success, particularly in the United States, where it reached number 28 on the Billboard 200 chart, and was certified platinum for 1 million sales in the United States alone. In the band's native country, it sold well. Black Sabbath is the debut studio album by the English rock band Black Sabbath. Released on 13 February 1970 in the United Kingdom and on 1 June 1970 in the United States, the album reached number eight on the UK Albums Charts and number 23 on the Billboard charts. Black Sabbath is widely considered the first heavy metal album. Additionally, the opening track of the album, Black Sabbath, has been referred to as the first doom metal song. Black Sabbath. The song Heaven and Hell was one of the first Sabbath songs I discovered already being a Dio-fan at the time and I learned later that the whole album was equally good. Type: Full-length. The bass line for Heaven and Hell was written by Geoff Nicholls. Geoff Nicholls was originally brought in to replace Geezer Butler, but moved to keyboards when Geezer returned to the band before the album was recorded. There's another rumour that the bass on this album was actually played by Craig Gruber, and not Geezer, but this is largely unfounded. Craig was briefly tried out for bass during the period that Geezer quit, but did not formally join. Complete with a slow plodding bassline and repetitive drumming, the album's title track is quite possibly the best thing Sabbath have ever done, in fact, I go so far as to say it's one of the best Doom Metal songs ever recorded
