It's still a stretch to talk about Black Dice as a formalist collective, but the Brooklyn band's migration from loose noise to something more structured counts as one of the most intriguing narratives in the art-rock underground. In the beginning, around the turn of 2000, Black Dice became notorious for playing antagonistic post-hardcore punk shows in dramatically darkened rooms. Black Dice are as engaging and deranged as ever, and their fifth album is yet another one of their warped takes on electronic soundscaping. Full of whirs, buzzes, and glitchy blips galore - like the mind of a robot as it runs out of batteries - Repo finds the Rhode Islanders a long way from their noise rock roots. The pacing is more manic and the skronk is set to overdrive. Black Dice is an American experimental rock group currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Black Dice formed in spring 1997 soon after guitarist Bjorn Copeland met drummer Hisham Bharoocha and bassist Sebastian Blanck when they were students at the Rhode Island School of Design. Eric Copeland vocals was still attending high school in Maine and would visit on weekends. Early shows seldom lasted more than fifteen minutes and were characterized by violent performances where injuries were often sustained. Those patented Black Dice clutches of noise sound more specifically placed on Repo than they did on 2007's Load Blown, an album that seemed to prioritize textural smear more than simple rhythm or spacing. Repo is still abstract in a similar and smeary way, but it sounds like Black Dice have gotten a better handle on their gear- as if, having learned how to make more and more different noises on more and more different machines, part of their project has turned more toward what exactly to do with those noises.
