Info
Between the Wars was an extended play released by Billy Bragg in 1985. It reached number 15 on the UK Singles Chart. The title track was inspired by the UK miners' strike 19841985. The choice of other songs on the record was also relevant to the dispute - Which Side Are You On is an updated version of the American pro-trade union song of the same title from the 1930s, whilst It Says Here is critical of the political bias of British newspapers, most of which opposed the strike. Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy. Life's a Riot with Spy vs Spy is Billy Bragg's first album, released in 1983. All songs on the original album consisted of Bragg singing to his electric guitar accompaniment. The original album played at 45 rpm rather than the more usual 33. 3 rpm, contained only seven songs and lasted for only 15 minutes and 57 seconds. However, rather than being classified as an EP, it qualified for the UK albums chart and reached number 30 in January 1984. Life's a Riot played a huge part in forging my worldview. Twenty-eight years later, I can only find minor philosophical faults in Bragg's lyrics. In fact, it's eerie depressing even that so little of what he was hollering about in 1983 has changed. Was this what it was like when Billy Bragg first saw the Clash I went out that week, aged 12, and bought the Between the Wars EP and, shortly after, Life's a Riot. His foghorn voice as soulful in its own way as Levi Stubbs's was distinctive, but equally the guitars on Life's a Riot still kill me. When Bragg played that bashed-about, solid-bodied wooden guitar, it was like someone thrashing you with barbed wire. Between The Wars' from Billy Bragg's 1987 compilation album 'Back To Basics', re-released by Cooking Vinyl in 1993. The album collates the releases 'Life's A Riot With Spy Vs. Spy' and 'Brewing Up With Billy Bragg', as well as the 'Between The Wars' EP. Buy 'Back To Basics' Folk-Rock. Songs in album Billy Bragg - Life's A Riot With Spy Vs Spy 1983. Billy Bragg - The Milkman Of Human Kindness. When Billy Bragg struck out on his own after mustering out of the British Army and his short-lived punk band Riff Raff, he set out to be a one-man version of the Clash, and his first recorded salvo is nearly as strong a statement of purpose as the Clash's self-titled debut. Life's a Riot with Spy vs. Please retry. This is a digital and live remastering of the original album come EP as used to be ' Life's a riot with spy v spy '. To this day I still don't know what the title refers to as none of the lyrics seem to have a connection. But anyway, its a brilliant album and the Digital remaster is clear and punchy just as you would expect. What I didn't exactly expect was the quality of the Live set which being 30 years after the original was just as powerful just as sharp and just as edgy as before. The first time I brought the cd back in the 90s. I played it to death
