Info
Cheap Thrills is the second studio album by American rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. It was their last album with Janis Joplin as lead singer before she started a solo career. For Cheap Thrills, the band and producer John Simon incorporated recordings of crowd noise to give the impression of a live album, for which it was subsequently mistaken by listeners. Only Ball and Chain was actually recorded in concert at Winterland Ballroom. Cheap Thrills - Big Brother & The Holding Company, Janis Joplin. One of the most eagerly awaited albums in rock history, Big Brother & the Holding Company's 1968 major label debut they'd previously released one thinly produced collection on the small Mainstream label made good on all the hype generated by Janis Joplin's amazing performance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year before. Joplin and her band Big Brother & the Holding Company had earned extensive press notice ever since they played the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967, but for a year after that their only recorded work was a poorly produced, self-titled album that they'd done early in their history for Mainstream Records and it took the band and the best legal minds. SummertimeLive at the Carousel Ballroom - June 22, 1968. One of the biggest albums of 1968, Cheap Thrills was the biggest release by Big Brother & The Holding Company. The electric counter-culture cover art, as designed by Robert Crumb, is one of the most recognizable album covers of all time, perhaps rivaled by Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club. The ripping guitar solos, as well as the distinct rasp of Janis Joplins voice, helped propel this album to be one of the most prolific rock albums of its era and all time, complete with classics such as Piece of My Heart , Summertime , and Ball and Chain. Cheap Thrills Q&A. Big Brother & the Holding Company. Bill Graham utters these words at the very start of the San Francisco band's classic Cheap Thrills album, introducing the band not just Janis Joplin and a bunch of guys who wandered onstage to back her up. Released on Aug. 12, 1968, Cheap Thrills was Big Brother's second album, but in a way it's their first real statement. The band's self-titled debut from the previous year was released after its breakthrough performance at the Monterey International Pop Festival. But it didn't sell well and couldn't capture the group. Janis Joplins time in the San Francisco blues crew Big Brother and the Holding Co. was relatively short, only a couple of years - just long enough to record two albums and become an era-defining flashpoint at the Monterey Pop Festival. Their second album, 1968s Cheap Thrills, became an acid-rock landmark thanks to the barnburner Piece of My Heart, a sultry cover of Summertime and the crushing, epic cover of Big Mama Thorntons Ball and Chain. It went to Number One and was certified gold and within a few months of its release, Joplin quit to become a solo star
