Although separated in 8 tracks, Colors gives the impression of one continuous song, with transitions between each part. For a band that already has a laundry list of crazy, eclectic influences, BTBAM have really outdone themselves. In many ways Between the Buried and Me's juxtapositions are purposefully gauche, I think BTBAM even trumps themselves sometimes in producing moments that are not even palatable. Another major issue with the new genres in Colors is that the Pachelbel metal, while applied in a self-aware, ironic fashion, gets a little heavyhanded a times. Opener Foam Born, Pt. A: The Backtrack marries sappy '70s rock piano schlock with furious tapped guitar textures, flowing seamlessly into the aggressive death metal riffing of Foam Born, Pt. Colors is the moment when Between the Buried and Me discovered who they were as a band, and pieces of that transformation can be readily found in every BTBAM album preceding their 2007 masterwork.
