Rimsky recorded the Beethoven symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic for DG during the late 1970s to much acclaim. Those performances quickly overshadowed Bernstein's earlier set with the NYPO recorded for Columbia in the 1960s. There is much to recommend in this earlier survey of the symphonies however, collected by Sony Classical here along with a set of overtures and a great performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto with Isaac Stern as soloist. Bernstein was Musical Director of The New York Philharmonic from 1958-1969 and these recordings, his first complete Beethoven symphony cycle, were predominantly recorded in 1963-4. Beethoven dedicated the Fifth Symphony to two of his patrons, Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz and Count Razumovsky. Reception and influence. It was played in the inaugural concerts of the New York Philharmonic on 7 December 1842, and the National Symphony Orchestra on 2 November 1931.
